Serve, learn, lead, and explore in beautiful Elkhart County. AmeriCorps members play an integral role in engaging volunteers to become champions for our mission, and creating new tools and systems to build capacity.
During a year of service with Habitat for Humanity of Elkhart County, AmeriCorps members gain insight into the inner working of a non-profit organization and gain hands-on experience in leadership, public speaking, and community development. Where will you serve?
Habitat for Humanity of Elkhart County has been building homes with families in need since 1986 and have served over 200 families to date. With your help we can increase the number of families we serve annually. During your year of service, you will gain insight into working within a nonprofit organization through hands-on experience in community development. Join our Habitat’ family and form lasting relationships, while creating safe, affordable housing solutions with hard-working families in Elkhart County. Elkhart County is a diverse and growing community with lots of local culture. There is as system of bike/walking paths the encourage citizens to get outside. The dining scene is becoming more diverse all the time with Indian, Mexican, Tapas, Neapolitan pizza, a 50’s style diner and much more. We also have coffee houses, pubs, and local breweries. There is a growing art community and several places for local artists to showcase and sell their art. Want to attend a concert? The local record store and local brewing company host concerts regularly. Goshen College has a top-notch Performing Art Series and the Lerner Theatre brings in a variety of concerts and shows. Chicago is 2 ½ hours away and offers all the trappings of a big city. Southwest lower Michigan is a summertime destination with small towns and beautiful beaches along Lake Michigan.
Resource Development VISTA 2020-21
This full-time AmeriCorps service position offers a great opportunity to make a real impact in the lives of others while building your own knowledge and skillset.
What will you do?
The Resource Development VISTA member will help strengthen donor relations, specifically in the faith community, by studying and engaging the faith community. In addition, this member will aid in the implementation of a new donor/volunteer database and will assist in developing a donor engagement plan.
*Research, develop and document a resource development and marketing plan, including targeting local individuals, businesses, faith organizations, school groups, civic groups and other community organizations.
*Research, develop, and implement systems to track donor contacts and donations and develop a donor recognition plan to recognize donor loyalty and/or milestones.
Benefits of AmeriCorps service
*Annual living allowance of $13,399.15 (determined by the service location).
*Segal Education Award of $6,195, upon successful completion of service.
*Health benefits and enrollment in Employee Assistance Plan.
*Ten personal and 10 medical leave days.
*Possible forbearance or deferment of qualified student loans.
*Child care benefits, if you qualify.
*Non-competitive eligibility status for federal employment for one year after successful completion of service.
*Relocation travel assistance for members relocating more than 50 miles to serve.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must hold one of the following citizenship statuses: US citizen, US National, Lawful Permanent Resident Aliens or is a person residing in a state that has the following legal residency classifications: refugee, asylum or asylee, temporary protected status, or deferred action for childhood arrivals (DACA) status. Applicants must be at least 18 or older and have a high school diploma or GED.
Preferred Qualifications
*Knowledge of, and willingness to promote, the mission and activities of Habitat for Humanity International and AmeriCorps.
*Ability to work with a diverse group of people.
*Strong written and verbal communication skills.
*Strong research skills.
*Detail-oriented and highly organized.
*Experience working as a member of a team.
*Basic experience with Microsoft Office Suite, especially Word and Excel.
*Current valid driver’s license, a clean driving record and reliable transportation

Project Development VISTA 2020-21
For one year, you can get paid to build sustainable solutions in a community, gain valuable hands-on experience, and prepare for your future. This full-time AmeriCorps service position offers a great opportunity to make a real impact in the lives of others while building your own knowledge and skillset.
What will you do?
The project development VISTA member develops and implements new programs, creates or improves policies or procedures, and develops strategies to build leadership and leverage resources that increase the number of families served through the Habitat mission. This could look like developing plans to engage veterans at the community level, designing a home preservation program or laying the foundation for a neighborhood revitalization program.
*Develop sustainable systems or programs that will address the needs of the local Habitat.
*Develop systems to accurately track and record project related data and results, focused on ensuring sustainability and communicating results to stakeholders.
*Develop documentation processes, materials and procedures for coalition activities.
