Malone Family
Homeowners since 2004, Vernard and Alicia Malone stepped into a new chapter of hope and peace of mind after partnering with Habitat for Humanity to build a place their family could truly call home.
Their journey came to life during a Blitz Build in Goshen’s Harrison Ridge subdivision, where nearly 100 volunteers worked side by side to raise the walls of their home in just over a week. For Vernard, who worked as a custodian at Notre Dame, and Alicia, who cherished time with family and music, this was more than construction. It was a community showing up powerfully. As they worked on other homes, they imagined what it would feel like when their own began, holding onto that vision with excitement and gratitude.
At the time, they were raising two young children, Vershon and Ashayla, in a season filled with both joy and responsibility. Vershon loved to dance and attend preschool, while little Ashayla followed closely behind her big brother with energy and admiration. Through it all, Vernard and Alicia longed for consistency, a place where their children could grow up with stability and where monthly payments would remain predictable, easing the uncertainty that comes with renting.
When their home was complete, it represented far more than a new address. It was the answer to a deep desire to build a strong foundation for their family. Vernard reflected on the experience with gratitude, recognizing that the hard work was worth it for the chance to raise his children in a safe, stable place.
