Elhafiz and Shama Mohamedein

A homeowner since 2006, the Mohamedein family built a foundation of stability, belonging, and new opportunity after years of perseverance.

The Mohamedein family’s journey began with a vision for a better life. After starting the immigration process in 1999, they arrived in the United States in 2002, leaving behind Elhafiz’s career as a banker in Sudan. They enrolled in a family literacy program to learn English and navigate life in a new country. It was through this program that they discovered Habitat for Humanity and began to see the possibility of owning a safe, affordable home.

While working full-time and raising their young children, Elhafiz and Shama remained focused on creating opportunities their family did not have before. Elhafiz worked long hours in manufacturing, while Shama cared for their children at home, pouring her energy into their growth and well-being. Living in Elkhart, they hoped for a future where their children could attend strong schools and grow up safely.

That dream became reality through Habitat for Humanity and a community that rallied around them. Local churches and volunteers came together to help build their home, offering both labor and support. As they worked alongside those volunteers, the Mohamedein family took meaningful steps toward stability and independence. Their new home represented more than shelter. It was a fresh start, a place of belonging, and the foundation for a brighter future for their children.
