Portillo Family

Kayla  was accepted into Habitat for Humanity’s Homeownership Program in the summer of 2025, marking a turning point for her and her three children—D’Marion (13), Kalees (12), and Kaleah (10). For their family, this opportunity represents far more than a new house; it offers stability, security, and a renewed sense of hope.

After leaving a seven-year relationship, Kayla and her children temporarily stayed with friends. While she remains deeply grateful for that support, the arrangement was crowded and never intended to be permanent. Six months later, she was able to secure a two-bedroom apartment—the most she could afford. Even then, space has been a constant challenge. Her daughters share one bedroom, her son has the other, and Kayla has converted part of the living room into her own sleeping area.

Despite these obstacles, Kayla has worked consistently to provide for her family. She has been employed for five years at Placon, a packaging manufacturer, where she works as a machine operator. She values her job, noting that she feels safe, supported, and connected to her coworkers.

Kayla first learned about Habitat’s Homeownership Program several years ago when it was introduced at her church. The idea stayed with her, and when the time felt right, she took the step to apply. When she received the call that she had been accepted, the news was difficult to process at first. As it sank in, her disbelief turned into gratitude and a deep sense of honor.

“For me, this feels like a second chance at life,” Kayla shares. “Having a home means I’m successful.”

To Kayla, homeownership is about more than walls and a roof—it’s about creating a safe, stable, and affordable environment where her children can thrive. She looks forward to each child having their own bedroom, giving them both comfort and privacy. Her children are already imagining life in their new home, with her middle child especially excited about something simple but meaningful: having a dedicated laundry room.

Kayla describes this chapter in one word—joyful. “I’m so ready,” she says.

Through Habitat’s required classes, she has built practical skills in budgeting, saving, and financial planning. She also discovered an unexpected passion for construction while helping build her home, gaining confidence as she learned to use tools and work alongside volunteers.

Outside of work, Kayla treasures time with her children—whether it’s ice cream outings, beach trips, or evening walks. She is especially excited about their future home’s location near the Tolson Center and downtown amenities.

Throughout this journey, Kayla’s faith has remained a steady source of strength. For her family, this home represents not just a milestone, but the beginning of a new, more stable future filled with possibilities.
