Calderon Family
Carmen Calderon is a single mother working hard to build a stable future for herself and her two-year-old daughter, Thyri. She works full-time as a phlebotomist at Goshen Family Medical and also serves as a float, stepping in where needed. Despite her steady work, Carmen found that safe and affordable housing was still out of reach.
After being accepted into Habitat for Humanity’s homeownership program, Carmen moved back in with her parents to save money for her down payment. She and Thyri currently share a single bedroom with little space for clothing, toys, or privacy.
“Rent just isn’t affordable,” Carmen said. “I make too much to qualify for assistance but not enough to afford a place on my own.”
She learned about Habitat through a friend and followed the organization’s social media posts. When she was accepted into the program, she quickly began completing her sweat equity hours and attending homeownership and financial literacy classes.
Carmen looks forward to moving into a home that will offer privacy, space, and security for her and her daughter. The affordable mortgage will allow her to return to school to pursue a degree in nursing.
“This home will allow me to focus on my future and my daughter’s,” Carmen said. “I’m ready to invest in something long-term—for both of us.”
